Crime Rate Changes in the G7Archived Topic Box from the 2003 Third Annual Benchmark ReportBritish Columbia had a large drop in it’s overall crime rate between 1995 and 2001. The rate per 100,000 population for all Criminal Code offenses dropped by 23.2% from 14,899 in 1995 to 11,447 in 2001*. The United States also saw a large decrease in its overall crime rate over this period (21.2%). Canada, Italy and Germany had decreases ranging from 5.4% to 6.4%. Japan, the United Kingdom and France had increases, ranging from 9.9% to 48.7% between 1995 and 2001.
Notes: *These numbers do not match those reported elsewhere in this report because these data include “Other Criminal Code” statistics in addition to the Violent and Property Crime totals presented in Performance Indicator 20.
