The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) was developed so that OECD and other countries could
improve their understanding of what makes young people and education systems in general successful. The data
presented above are the second results from this program. See Appendix C of the 2004 Benchmark Report for
information on the terms used and Appendix D of the same report for a table with all the international jurisdictions
included.
How Does BC Compare?
British Columbia performs well on PISA testing earning the second rank in reading, fourth in mathematics, fifth in
both science and problem solving. British Columbia's average rank of 4.0 places it behind only Finland with an
average rank of 1.5 and Korea with an average rank of 2.8. Canada's average rank was 8.3. Tunisia had the lowest
average rank of 40.8, having ranked second-last on math and last on reading, science and problem solving.
