BC Progress Board Releases 2001 Report

Vancouver B.C. -- The BC Progress Board today delivered its 2001 report to the Premier. The report establishes a competitive benchmarking framework for BC and sets overall goals and targets to return the province to a leadership position in Canada by 2010.

"This first report from the Progress Board establishes a set of challenging measures that will be used to evaluate the economic and social progress of the provincial government", said David Emerson, BC Progress Board Chair and CEO of Canfor Corporation. "It outlines "core" targets and performance indicators that will be tracked over time and will provide both the government and the public with an objective assessment of our province's progress in key areas".

Twenty-six measures of performance on the economy, innovation, education, environment, health, and social condition will be tracked. B.C.'s performance on these indicators will be compared regularly against the performance of other provinces in Canada and, where similar data is available, against Washington State, Oregon, and California.

Mr. Emerson concluded, "Ultimately, B.C can and should rank number one or two on our core targets by the year 2010. While there is a lot of hard work ahead, we believe the targets are achievable".

The Benchmarking Report is meant to be a "living document". Additional measures or special topics of interest will be added over time, some to be included in the next report scheduled for completion in December 2002. The Public is invited and encouraged to provide comments, feedback or ideas to the Progress Board. The full report is available on the Progress Board's web-site www.bcprogressboard.com. Comments can also be sent by e-mail to ideas@bcprogressboard.com

The BC Progress Board is an Independent Panel comprised of 15 senior business executives and academic leaders established by Premier Gordon Campbell in July 2001. The Board's mandate is to benchmark BC's progress relative to other jurisdictions and to provide the government with strategic advice on ways to improve the performance of the provincial economy and its social policy supports.
